Speaking of religion at the dinner table can be risky, but bear with me in this review, as it puts my next coffee venture in context.

Upon placing my order I saw the barista pour the espresso first, before the milk was ready – a big no-no in my book. I was still giving her the benefit of the doubt as I admired the cookie display – there were quite a few creative options to choose from, but I refrained (even if the mini stroopwafel was calling to me).

You have probably already gathered my expectations were low… but once my brain really registered the taste, I realised it was absolutely lovely!
GROUND Bike and Coffee
It was a big cup when it arrived, but the colour of the concoction – sans latte art – took me back to Perth, so I dove in eagerly… and emerged burnt and disappointed.
Newton Dee Café
Only upon arrival I realised it was a community centre… I wasn’t deterred, however (although I did adjust my taste expectations) because the place had a charming feel about it – reminding me of summer camp retreat…
Clap Ka-fe
About half of the tables were taken and there was a small queue at the counter – difficult to decipher where it started or ended as the patrons here were relaxed and unrushed. Neither was I, so I took my time admiring the sweets selection, which called for attention: Japanese-inspired flavours of pastries and cakes beautifully presented and substantial in size despite their obvious Insta-appeal…
